Seriously.  You must be.

We all know about the huge earthquake Japan got slammed with.  This small subsection of the American population got right into supporting the Japanese.

Time for compassion and not politics

I think we are all more or less aware of what happened at Christmas Island last December.  Some 50 people drowned when a boat of refugees crashed into rocks off of the island.  Some survived, such as young nine year old orphan Sinan Khaliq from Iran.  His father drowned and was burred in Sydney this week, but his mother was never found.  He was flown to attend the funeral, then flown back to detention on Christmas Island.  That is a 10,000 klm round trip at least.

Why not let the boy stay?  Why does a child who has lost everything have to return across the country to a lockup?  This boy has family in Sydney – his aunt, a permanent resident there.  There are also immigration centers in Sydney if the need for due process is unavoidable.  That gives the Australian government two viable options for helping him, so why not?

The shire president says this about the boy’s emotional state.

“The boy … in particular, who’s been highlighted in media coverage, is in a terrible way,” he said.

“I understand he goes to the gate every time a bus bringing a new group of refugees to Christmas Island turns up at the detention centre. He is waiting at the gate looking for his mother and father.”

I paid 1000s of dollars in tax last year, so please feel free to use some of that to let him stay in Australia with his remaining family.  I’m fine with it, pinky promise.

Some Things I’ve learnt being married

  1. Keep small things small.  If she squeezes the toothpaste tube in the middle or never remembers to lift the toilet seat back up after she visits it – who cares.  These aren’t things to make a big fuss over.  Married life can get stressed enough without adding to it with the trivial.
  2. Money needs to be kept in its place.  It is all too easy to obsess over it, to spend time worrying about budgets and future expenses, and then forget that you are in this together and that it is together that stressful financial times are dealt with.
  3. Wives, distracted for the sixth time by tickling them under their arms while they’re trying to do their hair, are liable to snap, growl and bite.  Just sayin…
  4. Buy flowers and chocolates regularly on an irregular basis.  If you really need to be told this, go outside and slap yourself.
  5. You will never face anything more terrifying than sitting in a doctor’s room while you wait for him to diagnose her and tell you both what is wrong.  Ever.
  6. Breakfast in bed is a winner.
  7. You fart in bed too, so don’t worry too much about it.
  8. Make time to be silly.  It’s the small moments that I remember and treasure the most.
  9. Take lots and lots of photos.
  10. Record her saying something silly.  There will come a time when you just want to hear her voice.
  11. Humming Darth Vader’s theme music while looking at photos of her mother might seem like a funny thing to do at the time, but I’ll bet the change in my pocket vs the change in yours it isn’t.  Although it probably is.
  12. Hold hands when out together.
  13. Put the wedding ring back on.
  14. Marriage is a marathon, not a sprint.
  15. She needs her own bank account, in her own name, totally independent from any shared accounts you might have.  History has, I think,  sadly proven the wisdom and necessity of it.
  16. You do too.
  17. Yes, it is your turn to drive when you next go out.
  18. Look but don’t touch.
  19. While in the middle of a stress induced doughnut eating frenzy, comments to the effect that eating all that fatty food won’t help the situation are not likely to be taken well.
  20. Your gut is probably bigger than her arse.
  21. The remote control is rightfully yours, as ordained by God and the natural laws of the universe.
  22. Tell her she looks sexy.
  23. She will never understand The Three Stooges, so don’t bother trying to explain it.
  24. No, she doesn’t think fart jokes are funny.  Sorry.
  25. Yes, it is ok to hate that builder fixing the roof.  He’s young, fit better looking than you and deserves to fall off the ladder.  Shaking it is illegal, so unfortunately you’d better not.
  26. For those times when you think you’re better off alone, try to remember how much it sucked when you were.
  27. Tearing up when Maximus dies is not unmanly.
  28. It’s nice when you realise that you’re as physically attracted to her now as when you were both 10 years younger and thinner.
  29. Learn how to make a nice cup of tea.

14 Year Old Rape Victim Flogged to death

The High Court yesterday ordered district officials in Shariatpur to explain why they failed to protect 14-year-old rape victim Hena from being whipped to death as per a fatwa on Monday.

The deputy commissioner, the superintendent of police of Shariatpur and the thana nirbahi officer of Naria upazila — where the incident took place–will have to report to the HC in 15 days how it happened although the court (HC) had eight months ago declared fatwa illegal and a punishable offence.

The reports said Hena was raped by her 40-year-old relative Mahbub on Sunday. Next day, a fatwa was announced at a village arbitration that she must be given 100 lashes. She fell unconscious after nearly 80 lashes.Fatally injured Hena was rushed to Naria health complex where she succumbed to her injuries.

How to make a Lemon, Lime and Bitters

I have no idea why the Americans and Europeans haven’t taken to this, as it is a damn nice non-alcoholic drink.  Try it and see.  Trust me, 20 Million Australians can’t be wrong.  Well we can, but we’re not wrong about this.

Ingredients

  • A tall glass
  • Angostura Bitters
  • Lime cordial (sweetened lime juice)
  • Lemonade (not Lemon Squash but 7up or Sprite will do)
  • Ice

How To

Put 4 – 6 drops of the bitters in the glass, and swirl it around to coat the bottom of the glass.  Add in the ice.  Fill the glass with the lemonade and add in a small amount (a shot’s worth or so) of the lime cordial.   Drop in a slice of lemon or lime to make it look good.

From Richard Stallman, the founder of the Free Software Foundation, comes an interesting piece published by the Huffington Post.

After months of isolation and sleep deprivation — psychological torture — Bradley Manning probably no longer knows whether he was involved in leaking collateral murder video and various other scandalous documents. True or not, he is likely to confess to it, but what his captors really want is to get Julian Assange. They want to claim he was involved in convincing Manning to leak the documents so they can punish him too. They could make Manning say so, but testimony from a broken co-defendent may not be very convincing. They need more.

They may try to use you to get it.

And more.  He describes how law enforcement can pressure you, how they can use innocent statements to convict you of things you didn’t do, and finishes with a somewhat stark warning.

If you’re in the computing community or the dissident community, or you know someone who is, be careful for your friends’ sake. It is a crime to lie to investigators, and they can twist most anything you might say to them into a lie; but it is lawful to refuse to answer, or (much better) to bring a lawyer who will remind you to say nothing.

Meanwhile, and don’t gossip about your acquaintances with people you don’t know very well — nor on the telephone even with friends — nor in a room where there is an eavesdropping device (aka cell phone) unless ALL its batteries have been removed.

First Human Photo

Anybody know why?  This did the rounds at work some months back.

Well, it is likely that this is the first photograph to contain a person. Yes, it’s the first photograph of a human ever taken.

The people are not easy to see, but they’re visible in the lower left corner of the picture. This was taken on a busy street in France, but due to how the image was captured, only those two people who are stationary can be seen. What are they doing? I don’t know. Maybe the one standing is getting his shoes cleaned or shined.
