Some months ago, Tricia and I decided to change our lives a little. First up was my final move away from a fairly hardcore addiction to MMO’s – specifically World of Warcraft. Now, unsurprisingly, I have Time!

So we’re going to change things. We’re going to try for a measure of self sufficiency. We’ll get the chooks up the back yard and some garden beds in the front to grow a ton of veges.

At least that’s the plan. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep some sort of diary about how it all goes.

First up, let’s clear some space.

Suddenly – space!

After the chainsaw chainsawed

Sort of.

This is what a tree looks like when it isn’t in the ground, being tree like. It’s also next weekend’s job – dragging this mess around the back so it can be burnt. And of course nature got Her revenge. On the Monday, I was too stiff and sore to go to work. It just goes to show – I’m not 25 anymore, and my 45 year old body needs to go a bit slower. My back is killing me, I can’t bend over and it hurts to walk around the room.

Next week’s plan is to clear up the mess and remove a few smaller trees and shrubs that are still there. When that’s done we’ll put up a fence and then start preparing for the garden beds.

The Woodward’s have entered the forrest!

Dam slammed the front door shut, annoyed as usual. He hated his job, hated his boss, hated the people he was forced to sit next to on the bus. For a young man, the list was long. The receptionist was cute though, he mused. Maybe he’d invite her over some time.

Grabbing a drink, he walked into the lounge and turned on the TV.

“Do you know why I started watching horror movies?” Dam glanced through to the spare room. “No? Well it’s because it was the only way I could be sure that someone somewhere was having a worse time than I was. And today has been the worst day ever. Want to hear about it?”

Sally looked over from the bench she was strapped to, and blinked once for Yes.

Sempronius Densus was a centurion in the Praetorian Guard in the 1st century. He was bodyguard to the deputy emperor, and is remembered by history for his courage and loyalty in singlehandedly defending his charge from scores of armed assassins, while all his comrades deserted or switched sides.

On January 10, 69, the emperor Galba chose a man to become his deputy and heir. One of Galba’s advisors had led Marcus Otho to expect to be appointed to this office, but instead Galba chose one Piso Licinianus. This unexpected choice led Otho to conspire to assassinate both of them and seize power.

On January 15 Otho struck. Galba and Piso were being carried on litters through the street when they were accosted by a large company of renegade Praetorians in Otho’s employ. The Praetorians were supposed to be the personal bodyguard of the emperor, but now they intended his death. Of all the soldiers present, only Sempronius Densus stood firm, while his colleagues either joined in the murder or melted away. While Piso fled to seek a safe hiding place, Sempronius bought him time to escape, first remonstrating with the assassins and then fighting them to the death.

At this point sources differ slightly. According to Plutarch, Sempronius gave his life defending both Galba and Piso:

“

No man resisted or offered to stand up in his defence, save one only, a centurion, Sempronius Densus, the single man among so many thousands that the sun beheld that day act worthily of the Roman empire, who, though he had never received any favour from Galba, yet out of bravery and allegiance endeavoured to defend the litter. First, lifting up his switch of vine, with which the centurions correct the soldiers when disorderly, he called aloud to the aggressors, charging them not to touch their emperor. And when they came upon him hand-to-hand, he drew his sword, and made a defence for a long time, until at last he was cut under the knees and brought to the ground.

”

After Sempronius finally fell, the assassins surrounded Galba and killed him.

Tacitus however describes Galba’s death as occurring first in the order of events, followed by the centurion’s last stand, in which Sempronius uses a pugio.

Dio Cassius simply relates:

“

Sempronius Densus, a centurion, defended him as long as he could, and finally, when he could accomplish nothing, let himself be slain over Galba’s body.

”

However, all of the sources agree on what happened next. While most of the assassins hacked Galba’s corpse to pieces and paraded his severed head on a pole, two of them sought out Piso, who had taken refuge in the Temple of Vesta. They dragged him outside and killed him at the door.

Around 120 people later claimed credit for killing Galba and Piso, hoping that Otho would reward them. However, in April that year Otho was deposed by Vitellius, who replaced him as emperor. Vitellius found the list of their names and ordered them all executed. He also disbanded the Praetorian Guard (although the Guard was reinstated by the next emperor, Vespasian).

Although ultimately unsuccessful, Sempronius Densus’s last stand is recorded by historians as being the only heroic act done in Rome that day. “This is why I have recorded his name, for he is most worthy of being mentioned.” — Dio Cassius.

And sure enough, when Briton Mark Wilkinson took the 4.8-metre cabin cruiser out for its maiden voyage, it promptly sank.

“If it wasn’t for the harbourmaster, I would have gone down with the Titanic,” Mr Wilkinson, who had to be fished out of the sea at West Bay harbour in Dorset, southern England, told local media.

“It’s all a bit embarrassing and I got pretty fed up with people asking me if I had hit an iceberg.

One eyewitness said: “It wasn’t a very big boat – I think an ice cube could have sunk it!”

Awesome.

From the Sydney Morning Herald.

THE Guantanamo Bay dossiers on the Australians Mamdouh Habib and David Hicks, released by WikiLeaks, demonstrate two things. One is that, if tortured sufficiently or even indefinitely incarcerated, most people will eventually break, agreeing to admit to almost anything to avoid further pain. The second is that interrogators, if freed of the restraints imposed by common decency, the rules of evidence and judicial oversight, tend to believe what they want to believe of their captives.

It is now clear that allegations on which the two Australians were held at the detention centre at the US naval base in Cuba were based on evidence that was often at best flimsy or unverified or, worse, tainted or plain wrong. A 2004 secret document from Guantanamo’s commanding officer acknowledged that Habib’s confessions while being held in Egyptian custody before being brought to Guantanamo – they included a plot to hijack a Qantas plane – had been made under ”extreme duress”. By Habib’s account, this was a euphemism for sustained and brutal torture.

And from ABC’s The Drum comes this commentary.

One local example is The Australian columnist Chris Kenny, failed Liberal politician and former chief of staff to former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer. During a Twitter conversation on Wednesday with Paul Barrett, a former Secretary of Australian Departments of Defence and Primary Industries & Energy, Kenny wrote, “You’re arguing to set free people who have murdered thousands” when Barrett asked why the US refused to conduct fair and open trials for individuals who had never faced justice.

In Kenny’s worldview, the American military has smeared hundreds of Muslims as terrorists and that’s good enough for him. The fact that the Wikileaks file shows the vast majority of Guantanamo Bay detainees had no connection to September 11 or terrorism can be ignored.
